Oyo Governor Makinde Under Fire From AAC For His Comments On 2027 Successor ControlThe African Action Congress (AAC) has criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for asserting that he will have a say in who succeeds him in the 2027 gubernatorial elections. Makinde made this statement during the receipt of the report from the Committee on Review and Update of Public Service Rules and Other Regulations in the State Civil/Public Service on Thursday.

In his remarks, Makinde stated, “I want to express my gratitude to this committee. It has taken almost a year to reach this point, but I still have two years and seven months left in my term. Those who are campaigning to be the next governor will have to wait because I will be here until May 29, 2027. I will also have a say in who becomes the next governor.”

He added, “While I may not have complete control, as the people of Oyo State will ultimately decide, I will influence the choice, particularly among those in the PDP. I remain the one managing the structure.”

In response, AAC Oyo Chair Kayode Babayomi issued a press statement denouncing Makinde’s comments as threats to democratic principles. The party stated, “This statement is not only demeaning but also a threat to our democracy and reveals the dictatorial tendencies of the Agodi emperor. By making this statement, Governor Makinde has indicated that the people’s choice for leadership beyond 2027 is irrelevant, suggesting plans to manipulate the election and undermine the will of Oyo State’s citizens.”

The AAC emphasized that the people of Oyo State are perceptive enough to recognize the implications of Makinde’s words and will respond accordingly in the future. “We in the African Action Congress in Oyo State warn the governor that in our democratic practice, the will of the people must prevail at all times. His emperor-styled regime has been evident since his first term, and the ‘give and take’ strategy he employed during the last administration will no longer be effective. The people are wiser now, and his superficial governance, empty promises, and trivial projects have been exposed.”

The party assured that they would implement all necessary measures to ensure the removal of the Makinde-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power in 2027 through the collective votes of the people.

“We want to assure Makinde that the 2027 election will not be business as usual. The good people of Oyo State are eager to show the Seyi-led PDP the exit, relegating them to the annals of history. The AAC stands ready to rescue the state alongside the people, remaining steadfast in our commitment to serve them.
