European officials reportedly assessed the situation, suggesting that the Kremlin threatened to withhold visa extensions from African students and young workers unless they agreed to military service. Yevgeny Primakov, Head of Rossotrudnichestvo, estimated that there are currently 35,000-37,000 African students in Russia.

The embassy dismissed these claims as baseless and labeled them as fake news, cautioning that such misinformation could harm the educational collaboration between Russia and Nigeria. It clarified that Nigerian students face no hurdles in extending their visas for studies in Russia. The embassy praised the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Association of Nigerian Students in Moscow for debunking the false allegations and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries.

In a statement, the embassy emphasized, “The Embassy of the Russian Federation stresses that these reports are not only untrue but also detrimental to Russian-Nigerian educational cooperation, potentially misleading scholarship applicants and their partners.” It expressed gratitude for the efforts made by Nigerian authorities and student organizations in Moscow to counter these misleading claims that undermine the friendship and collaboration between Russia and Nigeria.
