As Nigeria commemorated Democracy Day on June 12th, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, along with governors and civil society organizations, emphasized the importance of sustained participation in the electoral process to strengthen democracy. This year marks Nigeria’s 25th consecutive year of democratic rule since 1999. Speaker Abbas, in a message celebrating this milestone, assured Nigerians of forthcoming dividends of democracy. Governors across various states echoed similar sentiments, highlighting democracy as pivotal for development and emphasizing the need for fair and just electoral practices. They paid homage to democracy’s champions, including Abiola, President Bola Tinubu, and others, underscoring their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State affirmed that democracy has become ingrained in Nigeria’s political culture, attributing this achievement to the sacrifices of past leaders and activists. Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki praised Nigerians for upholding democratic values, stressing that continued democratic consolidation would foster sustainable development.
Across the nation, leaders called for vigilance against anti-democratic actions and pledged to uphold the principles of democracy for a united and prosperous Nigeria.
