Ruth Kadiri Reveals Why She Avoided An Expensive Wedding, Advises Young Couples
Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has advised young couples to avoid spending excessively on wedding ceremonies, warning that elaborate celebrations can place unnecessary emotional, mental and financial pressure on marriages.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the mother of two shared her views in a video posted on Instagram, where she encouraged couples to prioritise their relationship and future together rather than focus on meeting societal expectations through expensive wedding events.
Kadiri explained that some people enjoy dating and spending time with their partners but become anxious about marriage when they begin to consider the responsibilities and expectations associated with it. She suggested that elaborate wedding ceremonies could intensify these fears and make the transition into married life more stressful.
The actress recommended simple ceremonies involving close family members and a limited number of guests, suggesting that couples could complete their traditional marriage arrangements, hold a civil ceremony, receive prayers from a pastor and celebrate privately with loved ones.
She argued that there was no need for couples to feel compelled to organise multiple events, such as traditional weddings, court weddings and elaborate white weddings, simply to satisfy family members or society.
Kadiri also reflected on her own marriage, revealing that she had been married for approximately seven years. She suggested that avoiding an elaborate wedding celebration might have contributed to the stability of her relationship, while acknowledging that some marriages break down only months after the wedding.
The actress maintained that excessive pressure surrounding wedding preparations could distract couples from the more important work of building a lasting relationship. She encouraged young people to concentrate on their emotional readiness, understanding and commitment to one another rather than the size or cost of their celebrations.
Kadiri further criticised what she described as the pressure Nigerian society places on couples to follow established wedding traditions, noting that many people believe their marriages may not succeed unless they complete every expected stage of the ceremony.
She cautioned that large celebrations could expose couples to unwanted scrutiny and interference from others, urging them to protect their privacy and make decisions based on what works best for their relationship.
Beyond wedding traditions, the actress called for a broader change in societal expectations, particularly the pressure some parents place on their children to achieve financial success and provide money for the family.
She urged the younger generation to reconsider these expectations and embrace healthier approaches to relationships, family responsibilities and personal success.
Kadiri’s remarks have added to ongoing conversations about the rising cost of weddings in Nigeria and whether elaborate ceremonies are necessary for a successful marriage. Her message emphasises that the strength of a marriage should be measured by the commitment and understanding between partners rather than the extravagance of their wedding day.
