Veteran journalist and member of The Nation Editorial Board, Revd Mobolade Omonijo, has died at the age of 63.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the Diocese of Lagos West announced his death in a statement, disclosing that Omonijo, who served as Vicar of the Church of Pentecost in Dopemu, Lagos, died on October 15, 2026.

The diocese described the late cleric as a dedicated member of its Media and Publicity Department, noting that he had spent approximately four decades in journalism.

In a statement signed by the Administrative Assistant to the Bishop, the diocese paid tribute to Omonijo’s character, professionalism and commitment to his work. It also appealed to members of the public to remember his children and family in their prayers.

“He was very meek, lovely, conscientious, articulate, assiduous and meticulous. He was a person of remarkable verbal dexterity,” the statement read.

The diocese added a prayer for the deceased, saying, “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, and rise in glory. Amen.”

Omonijo was a prominent member of The Nation’s editorial team, where he served as Group Political Editor before joining the newspaper’s Editorial Board. He joined the publication in 2008 after working with The Economist and Vanguard.

A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he built a career spanning several decades, earning recognition for his reporting and contributions to political journalism.

The Nation Editorial Board Chairman, Sam Omatseye, also paid tribute to the late journalist, describing his death as difficult to comprehend and highlighting his dedication to the profession.

Omatseye recalled Omonijo as a close friend and a thorough reporter whose work was marked by rigour and attention to detail. He also praised his contributions to editorial discussions, noting that he often challenged partisan positions in pursuit of balanced perspectives.

“As a man, he was a friend. As a reporter, he was thorough and unsparing in rigour,” Omatseye said.

He added, “We shall never forget you, Reverend.”

Omatseye further disclosed that health challenges had prevented Omonijo from continuing in his role as political editor, while describing him as one of the best journalists he had worked with.

Omonijo’s death marks the loss of an experienced journalist whose career spanned both newsroom reporting and editorial work. The Nation said further details concerning his funeral arrangements would be announced by his family in due course.
