Sani Orders Return Of Abacha Family Properties Taken By El-Rufai’s AdministrationThe Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, has reinstated two properties previously seized from the family of the late General Sani Abacha during the administration of his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai. The properties, located at No. 9 Abakpa GRA and No. 1 Degel Road, Ungwan Rimi GRA in Kaduna, were revoked in 2022 over alleged violations of occupancy terms under the Land Use Act.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Reuben Atabo (SAN), the Abacha family’s lawyer, confirmed the reinstatement on Tuesday, calling it a significant development. He also noted that the initial revocation had caused considerable “embarrassment” to the Abacha family, prompting them to take legal action against the state government.
The properties had been publicly listed among those affected by the revocation in a widely circulated newspaper notice on April 28, 2022. The revocation included the name of the late Gen. Abacha as item 34 on the list of individuals and entities impacted.
Governor Sani reversed the decision through two separate letters, dated December 10, 2024, from the Kaduna Geographic Information Service (KADGIS). The letters, signed by Mustapha Haruna on behalf of the KADGIS Director-General, stated that the family must settle outstanding fees and charges as a condition for the reinstatement of the properties.
One of the letters read: “His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, has, under the powers conferred on him by the Land Use Act of 1978, reinstated the aforementioned title… subject to the strict condition of settling all outstanding fees and charges.”
The Abacha family, through Atabo, welcomed the decision, calling it a fair and just move. The reinstatement marks a departure from the El-Rufai administration’s position, which had cited “various contraventions” as the reason for revoking the properties.
