Sanwo-Olu’s media aide, Gboyega Akosile, issued a statement late Thursday, distancing the governor and the Lagos State Government from the inflammatory and dangerous rhetoric. Akosile emphasized that Lagos is a welcoming home for all Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic background.

Sanwo-Olu described the post as reckless and divisive, intended to create discord between the Yoruba and other ethnic groups in Lagos. He urged Lagosians to reject such provocations and called on security agencies to investigate the source of the post and take appropriate action.

This response from the governor follows a similar stance from Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. Atiku has called on the Federal Government to investigate and address the #IgboMustGo campaign. In a Facebook post, he denounced the hashtag as divisive and a threat to national unity, asserting that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to live and work anywhere in the country.
