President Tinubu, who chairs ECOWAS, had written to the Nigerian Senate seeking support for a military intervention to enforce compliance if the military junta in Niger remained uncooperative. However, the Senate rejected this request, urging diplomacy over military action.
In a statement issued in Ibadan, Maharaj Ji cautioned against resorting to force, such as deploying troops, to restore democracy in Niger.
He emphasized that the people of Niger should have the right to determine their country’s path to democracy and that outside intervention using undemocratic means contradicts the goal of achieving a democratic outcome.
Maharaj Ji expressed concern over ECOWAS’ ultimatum to the coup plotters, highlighting that the imposition of violent measures against a sovereign member undermines the principle of sovereignty.
He stressed that while democracy is preferred by many, the method to attain good governance should be decided by the citizens of each nation, and Niger’s leaders had veered from democratic protocols, encroaching upon the country’s sovereignty.
