Kwankwaso, who ran for president in 2023 under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and finished fourth with 1,496,687 votes, secured his strongest support from Kano State—his political stronghold—where he polled 997,279 votes, even surpassing the APC, which then controlled the state.

With the 2027 general election approaching and both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) struggling with internal strife, the ruling APC and President Bola Tinubu initially appeared well-positioned for re-election. However, the rise of the ADC coalition has disrupted that trajectory.

This emerging political alliance—comprising figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and others—is gaining momentum as it continues to attract political bigwigs nationwide.

In a recent interview with PUNCH, Lawal described Kwankwaso as a major political asset and confirmed behind-the-scenes efforts to bring him into the ADC coalition.

“It would be a huge gain if he joins us,” Lawal noted. “Several members of the coalition are eager to have him onboard. I’m aware that meetings with Kwankwaso are ongoing. He would be welcomed either personally or along with his supporters—or even as part of the NNPP.”

When asked whether the ADC coalition was also targeting the NNPP’s party structures, Lawal clarified that the focus is not on party platforms but on the people behind them.

“The coalition isn’t about party logos or letterheads—it’s about attracting influential individuals. Whether they come alone or as a bloc, they are welcome,” he said. “Even if Kwankwaso doesn’t officially join, many of his followers, including local government chapters of the NNPP, may defect individually.”

Lawal added that many notable figures across the states are already aligning with the ADC independently of their parties, citing Atiku’s entry into the coalition without formally bringing along the PDP.
