The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas as Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, alongside Dr. Uchenna Eugene Okolocha, who will serve as Commissioner representing the South-South region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The confirmation came after the Senate adopted a report presented by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central), during plenary.
The appointments were made under the provisions of Section 2 (1) and (2) of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022, which authorizes the President to appoint a Chairman and three Commissioners, subject to Senate approval.
According to the committee’s findings, only two of the three nominees—Professor Dakas and Dr. Okolocha—appeared before the committee for screening on June 25, 2025. The third nominee, Professor Fatima Alkali from the North-East, declined the nomination and formally notified the Presidency of her decision.
The report confirmed that both appearing nominees met all legal and professional criteria, demonstrated high competence, and had no petitions or security concerns raised against them.
To maintain both regional and gender representation, the committee recommended nominating another candidate from the North-East, preferably a woman.
Several senators lauded the credentials of the nominees, especially Professor Dakas, a former Attorney General of Plateau State and an authority in constitutional law.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) praised Dakas’ “intimidating” academic and legal qualifications, noting that many in the chamber had studied with him and could vouch for his brilliance and integrity.
Senator Adebiade (Osun Central) echoed the praise, urging the appointees to remain committed to delivering meaningful legal reforms in the country.
At the end of deliberations, the Senate gave unanimous approval to the appointments of Professor Dakas (North-Central) as Chairman and Dr. Okolocha (South-South) as Commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission.
