A total of 207 casualties and over 500 injuries have been confirmed in the devastating flood that recently struck Mokwa, in the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. Arah described the flooding—affecting two communities—as one of the worst disasters in the state’s recent history, noting that the number of missing persons is still uncertain.
To aid displaced victims, the state government has provided ₦500,000 to each affected household to assist with securing new housing. In addition to financial aid, NSEMA has distributed food supplies and essential relief materials to alleviate the victims’ hardship.
As part of its proactive strategy, Arah said the agency has launched its annual flood awareness and early warning campaign across the eight emirate councils in the state. The initiative is aimed at boosting public awareness, encouraging preparedness, and minimizing flood risks through direct community engagement and educational outreach.
He urged residents in flood-prone and waterway areas to relocate promptly to safer zones before the peak of the rainy season.
Arah also outlined the agency’s broader interventions, including responses to fire outbreaks and explosions across the state. He cited notable incidents such as the dynamite explosion in Sabon Pegi, the Diko tanker explosion, and the Agaie tanker fire, emphasizing that NSEMA has consistently provided support to both residential and commercial fire victims.
He concluded by commending Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for his administration’s unwavering support, which he said has empowered NSEMA to respond more effectively and promptly to emergencies.
