This humorous comment came after Senate President Godswill Akpabio invited Hanga, representing Kano Central and a member of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), to share his views on Ata, a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly.
Hanga’s lighthearted remark brought a moment of levity to the proceedings, prompting laughter among the senators as they engaged in the screening process. He said, “The appointment of this political juggernaut threatens me because we are from the same senatorial district. He is a grassroots politician who was my ally, but I support his nomination.”
In response, Akpabio reassured Hanga, noting that there was no reason for concern and describing Ata as a personable team player. “Despite party differences, you all stand united in supporting the nominee,” he said.
Earlier, Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila (NNPP, Kano South) urged his colleagues to allow Ata to “bow and go,” citing his experience as a parliamentarian in Kano. Kawu praised Ata as a grassroots politician deeply connected with the masses.
Deputy Senate President Senator Barau I Jibrin also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for nominating Ata. “I applaud Mr. President for this nomination,” he stated, highlighting Ata’s strong political roots and connection to the community.
He continued, “Since the beginning of democracy in 1999, we’ve never had a president who started from scratch and reached the top like our current President. His understanding of Nigeria’s diverse regions is unparalleled. The people of Kano appreciate Mr. President for his inclusive approach and for bringing in this strategic nominee.”
Senator Barau expressed confidence that with Ata’s appointment, the APC would regain ground in Kano, adding gratitude to the President for his support and the establishment of the North West Development Commission headquarters in Kano. “We will continue to support your government and your vision for the nation’s prosperity,” he concluded.
