Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented the report leading to their confirmation during the plenary chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Issues within the Nigeria Police Force were emphasized during the session.

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan highlighted concerns over a significant manpower deficit of 20,000 officers in the police force over the last two years. This shortfall stemmed from disputes between the PSC and police leadership regarding constable recruitment authority, resolved by the Supreme Court.

Under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the police were tasked with recruiting 10,000 officers annually over six years. Senate President Akpabio expressed optimism that the new appointments would resolve conflicts and streamline recruitment.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Argungu to succeed former Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, appointed by Buhari in January 2023.
