Senate Engages In Urgent Closed-Door Meeting With Wike And FCT Police Commissioner To Address Insecurity

The Senate, together with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe, engaged in a confidential meeting on Wednesday to address the escalating insecurity in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

During the Wednesday plenary, the Senate made the decision around 12:20 pm to defer the first order of the day to a later legislative session, prioritizing the crucial security discussion. In response, Deputy Senate Leader Oyelola Ashiru presented a motion, backed by the Minority Leader, stating, “The minister and the commissioner will brief us on the modalities of security in the FCT.”

The Senate had previously summoned Wike and Commissioner of Police Igwe on February 28, following the kidnapping and murder of Chris Agidy, an aide to Senator Ned Nwoko. The legislative body decided that the FCT Minister and the police commissioner should participate in a session to provide updates to the Red Chamber concerning the escalating incidents of kidnapping in Nigeria’s capital.

This Senate resolution stemmed from a motion presented by Senator Nwoko, emphasizing the abduction and killing of his senior legislative assistant, Agidy. According to reports, Agidy, along with 19 others, was abducted in the Galadimawa area of Abuja in November 2023.
