The summit will provide a platform to consolidate and review findings and recommendations from prior security hearings conducted across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, according to a statement from Sir Kenny Okolugbo of the Senate President’s media office.
“The 10th Senate has successfully concluded zonal hearings in all six zones of the country,” Okolugbo said.
He highlighted the inclusiveness of the hearings, noting the active participation of traditional rulers, stressing that “insecurity can only be effectively addressed by tackling its root causes at the grassroots level.”
On the issue of external attention to Nigeria’s internal crises, Okolugbo pointed out that the security challenges had been flagged domestically long before they attracted international notice. He referenced a tweet by former U.S. President Donald Trump but stressed that it was not the first warning.
He said: “This serious situation was raised on the floor of the 10th Senate by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as far back as May 2025. The challenge for our nation is that we often overlook internal solutions and react more to international interventions.
“We are witnessing killings of Christians and Muslims alike, and the impact is even more profound given that the Senate President, the nation’s third highest-ranking citizen and a Christian, is deeply aware of these losses.”
Highlighting the Senate leadership’s concern over the human cost, Okolugbo recalled Senator Godswill Akpabio’s earlier statement: “The death of a soldier is the loss of someone’s brother, son, or husband—and in the case of female soldiers, a daughter, wife, or sister. Their deaths are as painful as those of any civilian casualties.”
