The state government reported that the unrest began late Sunday night and continued into the early hours of Monday, escalating tensions after the recent passing of Prince Adegboyega Famodun, who died last week after a brief illness.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, it was confirmed that the governor had ordered a full lockdown of the community until order is restored.
Governor Adeleke said, “It is with deep shock and dismay that I received news of the breakdown of law and order in Igbajo last night and into today. As a government committed to maintaining peace and enforcing the rule of law, we cannot stand idly by while disorder prevails anywhere in the state.”
Identifying himself as the Chief Security Officer of Osun State, he added, “Therefore, I hereby declare an immediate and total lockdown of the town until normalcy and harmonious coexistence are fully restored in the once peaceful Igbajo community.”
The governor has instructed the Army, Police, Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to implement round-the-clock surveillance of the town.
The statement further warned that “all residents, both natives and non-natives, must adhere strictly to peace and order. Anyone found engaging in actions, overt or covert, that could escalate chaos in the community will face legal consequences in accordance with the law.”
