Senate Moves To Honour Late Afenifere Leader Fasoranti With Major Education Tribute
The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to rename an educational institution after the late Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in recognition of his contributions to education, democracy and national unity.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, who represents Ondo Central Senatorial District, during plenary on Wednesday.
Lawmakers paid glowing tributes to the late elder statesman, describing him as a committed education advocate, a defender of democratic governance and a prominent voice for national unity.
While leading the debate, Adegbonmire explained that Fasoranti’s background in education significantly influenced his commitment to public service and people-oriented leadership.
He recalled that the late Afenifere leader was a devoted follower of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and was associated with the Action Group during the First Republic and the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic.
The senator also highlighted Fasoranti’s opposition to military rule and his longstanding efforts to promote democracy in Nigeria.
Adegbonmire described the deceased as an honest and principled statesman who remained steadfast in defending democratic values and speaking out against injustice.
He further noted that Fasoranti worked with regional organisations, including Arewa and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, to foster cooperation among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.
According to the lawmaker, the late elder statesman consistently advocated a united and prosperous Nigeria, dedicating much of his life to promoting peaceful coexistence and national development.
Adegbonmire also urged the Senate to constitute a delegation to visit Ondo State to convey its condolences to the deceased’s family and the people of the state.
Contributing to the debate, Senator Jide Ipinsagba, who represents Ondo North Senatorial District, described Fasoranti as a passionate supporter of education whose contributions left a lasting impact on the sector.
Ipinsagba also commended the late Afenifere leader for his efforts to promote peace, harmony and understanding across Yorubaland and the country at large.
After deliberations, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, put the prayers of the motion to a vote, and the lawmakers approved them.
The Senate subsequently observed a minute’s silence in honour of Fasoranti, paying tribute to his legacy of public service, democratic advocacy and commitment to national unity.
