Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Sunday, Kingibe revealed the Senate’s plan to convene Wike and heads of security agencies to address the growing crime rates in the nation’s capital.
She stated, “When the Senate resumes, I plan that the FCT committee specifically needs to sit with the two ministers and the security agencies for them to give us their plans concerning security.”
While expressing confidence in the summons, Kingibe acknowledged that Wike’s response remains uncertain. Emphasizing Wike’s role as the chief security officer of the FCT, she asserted that he should present a comprehensive security plan to the committee, collaborating with the police commissioner and the head of the DSS.
Commending the efforts of security agencies, Kingibe stressed that more decisive actions are required to combat insecurity in the capital. She said, “I must commend the security agencies for doing something when we started to scream. But the truth is a little bit earlier, I tried to draw their attention, and I was told that it was exaggerated.”
The Senator underscored the need to address the root causes of insecurity, beyond apprehending kidnappers. Kingibe expressed concern over the increasing violence, highlighting that merely catching perpetrators is a symptomatic approach. She urged a comprehensive strategy to understand and address the underlying issues contributing to the insecurity in Abuja.
Citing data from media reports and Beacon Consulting, an indigenous intelligence outfit, Kingibe revealed alarming statistics, stating that in 2022, there were 194 attacks resulting in 69 fatalities and 152 abductions in the FCT. The figures underscore the urgency for a thorough and coordinated response to ensure the safety and security of the capital’s residents.
