In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Midat Joseph, the senator described the report—published by Premium Times on June 10, 2025—as “false and misleading,” and criticized the media outlet for its “sensational headline.”
The senator categorically denied any wrongdoing by his wife, stating that she has never been involved in any money laundering activity, either in the UK or elsewhere.
“The headline of the Premium Times report is entirely at odds with the actual content of the article. It is baseless, misleading, and completely unfounded,” the statement read.
Citing the court ruling referenced in the report, Senator Katung’s statement highlighted a key portion in which the judge explicitly cleared Mrs. Katung of any involvement. The judge said: “I do not find that she was cognizant of what Mr. Hussain was up to.”
The senator’s office emphasized that the case was a civil proceeding, not a criminal trial, further discrediting the implication of criminal behavior.
“The entire judgment arose from a civil matter—not a criminal one,” the statement noted, adding that the case is currently being appealed.
Reiterating his and his wife’s commitment to lawful conduct, Senator Katung vowed to pursue legal action over what he termed a defamatory and damaging narrative.
“For the record, both Senator Sunday Marshall Katung and Mrs. Abigail Katung have always lived in accordance with the law and have nothing to hide,” the statement concluded. “They are determined to take all necessary legal steps to set the record straight.”
