During a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Oshiomhole emphasized that the value of the minimum wage has significantly diminished over the years due to inflation.
He argued that when the minimum wage was first introduced under Shehu Shagari’s government at N125, its value was two to three times higher than its current worth when adjusted for inflation….CONTINUE READING
To illustrate his point, the senator shared his personal experience with his cleaner, who has minimal education but efficiently takes care of his house.
Oshiomhole felt that it would be unjust to pay her anything less than N60,000, considering the cost of living and the responsibilities she has as a mother of four children.
He further emphasized that as an employer, he is aware of the financial burden his employees carry and pays them fairly based on their roles and responsibilities.
According to him, if he can pay his cleaner N60,000, he has to compensate his driver and security staff even more, considering the training and responsibilities they have.
Overall, Oshiomhole expressed his dissatisfaction with the current minimum wage and urged for a more reasonable and fair wage for workers in the country.
