The probe follows a motion of urgent public importance raised on Wednesday by Rep. Kwamoti Laori (Adamawa), who highlighted concerns over escalating violence and military involvement in civilian unrest in the region.
Laori informed the House that the victims were participating in a peaceful demonstration when they were allegedly shot, with over 30 others sustaining serious injuries and currently receiving treatment at hospitals in Numan and Yola.
He stated, “The killing of eight unarmed women, including a 13-year-old, by personnel of the Nigerian Military during a peaceful demonstration in Lamurde LGA, and injuring over 30 others, is tragic. This mirrors past incidents in Dong, Kodomti, Lawaru, Nzuruwe, and Shaforon communities in 2017, where civilians suffered at the hands of security personnel without meaningful investigation, prosecution, or compensation, indicating a troubling pattern of impunity.”
Laori condemned the alleged shootings as “inhumane, unjustifiable, and a gross violation of fundamental human rights enshrined in the Constitution,” warning that failure to act could intensify tensions in communities already grappling with insecurity driven by armed groups and kidnappers.
The House resolved that the Committees on Human Rights, Defence, and Internal Security conduct a fact-finding visit to Lamurde and submit their report within two weeks.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the session, also directed the Committee on Legislative Compliance to oversee the implementation of the House’s directives.
