Abubakar was confirmed as the party’s flagbearer during the NDC governorship primary held in Gombe.
He had earlier defected from the APC, citing worsening economic hardship and policies he described as unfavourable to Nigerians under the ruling party.
Speaking with journalists after his emergence, Abubakar expressed gratitude to the leadership of the NDC, delegates, and supporters for the trust placed in him.
He said his victory validated his earlier decision to join the party, which he described as one that upholds fairness and equal treatment for all members.
“Just as I had testified when I defected to the NDC, this is a political party where members are treated fairly and equally. It is a party where members’ mandates are not stolen or suppressed for favoured individuals, and this attestation has now been proven,” he said.
Abubakar added that his decision to leave the APC was motivated by his desire to operate within a fair political system and to continue serving the people with integrity and commitment.
He further noted that the conduct of the primary reflected the party’s dedication to internal democracy.
