The swift action underscored a sharp contrast in diplomatic responses: while Abidjan acted decisively, Abuja appeared slower to respond, raising questions about the Nigerian government’s coordination and proactive engagement.
According to sources who spoke with ThisDay, the Ivorian authorities arranged for Jonathan’s evacuation using the country’s presidential jet. Reports indicate that aides to President Bola Tinubu contacted Jonathan’s team in Abuja to assist in the process, rather than the Nigerian government formally initiating the rescue.
“It was the Côte d’Ivoire government that reached out to President Jonathan, providing the aircraft for his return,” a source, who requested anonymity, told ThisDay.
Although the Nigerian government later engaged to coordinate Jonathan’s evacuation, the Ivorian authorities had already ensured his safe departure back to Nigeria.
Contrary to earlier claims that the coup soldiers escorted Jonathan, sources confirmed that it was actually ECOMOG (Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group) forces—comprising troops from Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal—who provided security for his transfer from the hotel to the airport.
“You can see it was a presidential jet marked with the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire,” the source added.
