Sh*cking Footage: Delta Police Officers Beaten Man, Now In Custody After Viral Video

The Delta State Police Command has responded to a viral video showing a group of officers assaulting a young man after he asked them to display their empty hands before searching his bag.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred along Hospital Road in Asaba. The victim, reportedly wary of being set up, insisted the officers show their bare hands to ensure they did not plant any incriminating items in his belongings. This request allegedly enraged the officers, who then physically assaulted him.

In response to public outcry over the video, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, issued a statement on Sunday, July 27. He revealed that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, had immediately directed that the officers involved be identified and brought to the command headquarters for disciplinary action.

Edafe confirmed that the policemen have been identified and are currently in custody pending an internal disciplinary trial (orderly room trial). Their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has also been issued a formal query.

The CP emphasized that such behavior does not reflect the values of the Delta State Police Command. He assured the public that the officers will face appropriate punishment under the Police Act and regulations, stressing that no abuse of citizens’ rights will be tolerated under his leadership.

He further urged police personnel to maintain professionalism and uphold the rights of every citizen in line with the Nigerian Constitution. The CP also appealed to the public for calm and promised that justice will be served.
