The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, and barred him from engaging with the party in any capacity for the next 30 years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This decision was announced in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, following a resolution reached by the National Working Committee (NWC) after an internal investigation.

According to the party, El-Rufai never officially registered at his ward level as required by the SDP constitution, yet falsely claimed on social media that he had joined the party. Aiyenigba revealed that El-Rufai allegedly forged documents to support his claim and staged photographs with suspended party officials to create the illusion of legitimate affiliation.

The party accused him of gross misconduct, including misinformation, inducement, and political manipulation—acts it said sowed division within the party and threatened its ideological foundations.

Further, the SDP claimed El-Rufai publicly aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) while simultaneously trying to drag the SDP into an unauthorized coalition, an act deemed contrary to the party’s principles.

“Having confirmed his declaration for the ADC and his continued actions against the ethos of the SDP, the party is left with no choice but to dissociate from and expel him,” the statement read.

As a result, El-Rufai has been officially “banished and prohibited from applying for membership, associating with the party’s name, insignia, or participating in any of its activities for 30 years, effective immediately.”

The SDP also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant bodies to disregard any claims or representations made by El-Rufai in relation to the party.

Reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy and principled politics, the party encouraged Nigerians seeking to join its ranks to do so through lawful and transparent processes.

“In line with our constitution and guiding principles—as well as the Electoral Act and Nigeria’s Constitution—the NWC deliberated extensively on El-Rufai’s controversial and unauthorized self-declaration as an SDP member, despite affirmations from the Kaduna State chapter that he has never officially joined,” the statement concluded.
