Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Sani explained that El-Rufai viewed him as a political adversary and took steps to retaliate. He added that this clash led to the defection of several politicians from the party, and ultimately, his own loss of the senatorial seat.
Sani said, “El-Rufai proposed a $340 million loan, and we opposed it because we believed it would have devastating effects on the people. He saw us as enemies and responded accordingly. This dispute led many other politicians to leave the party, and in my case, I paid the price by losing my seat.”
He further remarked that recent statements by the current governor of Kaduna State had proven his earlier concerns about the loan’s damaging impact.
“At the time, El-Rufai, the state Assembly, and many political figures stood against me. But now, even the current governor has acknowledged that the loan has crippled the state’s finances. Many projects remain unfinished, and Kaduna is now the second most indebted state in Nigeria. This vindicates my position, even though I lost my seat,” he added.
The former senator expressed pride in his decision to oppose the loan, emphasizing that he values his moral stance over political success.
“I find peace knowing that, when I pass, no one will say, ‘Here lies the man who approved a loan our children will be paying for a century.’ That vindication means more to me than returning to the Senate,” he concluded.
