During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Shekarau declined to take a definitive stance on whether the presidency should return to the North or be handed to the South in 2027. Instead, he stressed that the priority should be on ensuring that political parties field the most qualified individuals.

“All the parties should come up with solid plans to present the best choices for the country. The question now is about the candidates the parties present,” he said. “Our challenge is for all parties to give Nigerians credible candidates, so we can choose the best from among them. But if they offer us poor options, we’ll have no choice but to pick the best among the bad.”

Shekarau also addressed the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, describing them as a strong message to the federal government. He emphasized that the protests, which took place in August, were not a regional or state issue but a national concern that should prompt the government to reassess its approach.

“The protests calling for the end of bad governance were a clear and direct message. It wasn’t a regional or state matter—it was a national issue. Nigerians are telling the government, particularly President Bola Tinubu, to go back to the drawing board and reconsider what they are offering,” Shekarau stated.

In conclusion, Shekarau’s comments reflect his belief that the next presidential election should focus on selecting the best candidates, regardless of regional considerations, and that the government must listen to the concerns of the people.
