Dele Farotimi Explains His Request To Peter Obi To Approach Afe BabalolaTope Temokun, the lawyer representing human rights activist and legal practitioner Dele Farotimi, has refuted claims that his client sent former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to plead with legal icon Afe Babalola over an alleged defamation lawsuit.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Temokun made the clarification during an appearance on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political program on Channels Television, on Sunday. The claims emerged following a visit by Peter Obi to Afe Babalola in early December, sparking widespread speculation about an out-of-court settlement.

Farotimi’s legal troubles began in early December when he was arrested by the Ekiti State police at his Lagos office and transported to Ekiti for prosecution. The charges against him stem from his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, in which he accused Afe Babalola of judicial corruption and influencing a revised Supreme Court ruling. Farotimi pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently being held in prison for two weeks as legal proceedings continue. He also faces related charges in Abuja and Oyo State.

In response to the claims about Peter Obi’s involvement, Temokun visited Farotimi in prison on Friday to clarify the situation. According to Temokun, Farotimi categorically denied sending Obi to seek a resolution with Babalola. The lawyer explained that the confusion surrounding Obi’s visit and the rumors of an apology stemmed from unclear information circulating after Obi’s trip to Ekiti.

Temokun said, “The recent events, including Peter Obi’s visit to Aare Afe Babalola and later to Mr. Dele Farotimi, have created some confusion. People were unclear about what exactly transpired. I visited Mr. Farotimi to clarify things and have a candid discussion with him.”

He continued, “After Peter Obi left Ekiti, news spread about conditions for Farotimi’s release and the possibility of an apology. I asked him directly, ‘What do you think should be done?’ regarding the visit and the ongoing situation. What is your message to Aare Afe Babalola, to the people outside, and to me as part of your legal team?”

Temokun went on to reveal Farotimi’s strong reaction to the idea of him begging anyone. “Farotimi said that anyone familiar with his principles and philosophy would know that he would never send anyone to beg, especially on a matter tied to his book, which he had published and which has been in circulation for some time,” Temokun stated.

Farotimi also made it clear that he would be deeply disappointed if anyone, including his own legal team, believed he would beg anyone or send someone to do so on his behalf. “He told me categorically that if I joined anyone in believing that he could beg someone, or that he had sent someone to beg, he would be so disappointed in me,” Temokun added.

As Farotimi’s legal battle continues, the controversy surrounding his arrest and the involvement of Peter Obi remains a hot topic of discussion.
