Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, where he is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The 81st UNGA General Debate is scheduled to run from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” Shettima is expected to present Nigeria’s position on major international issues affecting the country’s development, security, economy and international cooperation.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Shettima’s participation will focus on Nigeria’s national interests, commitment to multilateralism and President Tinubu’s call for reforms to global institutions to make them more representative and responsive to present-day economic and demographic realities.

“Our message in New York is clear. Nigeria believes in multilateralism, but the institutions that govern our world must become more representative, equitable, and responsive to the realities of today,” Shettima said in remarks conveyed by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha.

The Vice President is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate, outlining the country’s priorities on issues including peace and security, sustainable development, economic growth and global cooperation.

Beyond the General Debate, Shettima is scheduled to participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements with leaders of other countries, international organisations and development partners on the sidelines of the assembly.

Nigeria is also expected to use the engagements to advance discussions on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance, technology access and stronger African representation in international decision-making.

Shettima is leading a high-level Nigerian delegation that includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.

The Vice President’s attendance comes as world leaders gather in New York for the annual high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, which the UN describes as its largest annual gathering of global diplomacy.

Through his engagements, Shettima is expected to reinforce Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic priorities while seeking stronger international partnerships and greater attention to issues affecting Nigeria and the wider African continent.
