Shock Exit Rocks Liverpool As Richard Hughes Makes Stunning Move To Al Hilal

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has stepped down from his position at the Premier League club and is reportedly set to take up a new role with Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal after just over two years at Anfield.

The 47-year-old joined Liverpool from Bournemouth in June 2024, quickly becoming an influential figure in the club’s football operations, recruitment and transfer activities. His departure comes despite his contract with the Reds initially being scheduled to run until June 2027.

Hughes played a major role in Liverpool’s transfer dealings during his time at the club, overseeing approximately £200 million in spending during the latest summer transfer window. Among the notable additions was Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.

The sporting director was also involved in two of Liverpool’s biggest recent transfers, including the club-record £125 million acquisition of Alexander Isak and the £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz.

Hughes arrived at Anfield shortly after the departure of long-serving manager Jurgen Klopp and was heavily involved in the process that led Liverpool to appoint Arne Slot as his successor. Slot enjoyed a highly successful first campaign, guiding the Reds to their 20th Premier League title.

However, Liverpool were unable to maintain that level of success in the following season, finishing fifth in the league. Slot subsequently left the club and was replaced by Andoni Iraola, who previously worked alongside Hughes during their time at Bournemouth.

In a statement confirming his departure, Hughes expressed his affection for Liverpool and wished the club continued success in the future.

He said he would continue to follow and support the Reds while expressing his best wishes to everyone connected with the club.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon also paid tribute to Hughes, praising his contribution during a major period of transition at Liverpool. Gordon acknowledged Hughes’ role in overseeing football operations and recruitment while supporting the coaching staff.

According to Gordon, Hughes made a significant contribution to the club during his time at Anfield, although Liverpool respected his decision to pursue a new opportunity and wished him and his family well in their next venture.

Hughes’ expected move to Al Hilal marks a major change in his career and comes as the Saudi club continues to strengthen its football operations with high-profile appointments and investments.
