Shocking Reveal: Police Explain Why They Chained Makinde, Respond To Femi Falana’s Allegations
The Nigeria Police have defended their decision to chain Vincent Makinde, whose viral video sparked public outrage, citing violent behavior during detention.
In a statement released by the Force Headquarters Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police clarified that Makinde was restrained due to his aggressive conduct in custody. This follows a request from human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, for the suspect’s release from restraints.
Adejobi revealed that Makinde had been dismissed from the police force in 2022 after a thorough investigation and orderly room trial, which found him guilty of serious offenses including abuse of office, extortion, misconduct, dereliction of duty, and insubordination. He was arrested again in June 2024 for impersonation after attempting to present himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
The Police spokesperson further explained that after Makinde’s escape from lawful custody, officers deemed it necessary to chain him upon his re-arrest due to his violent behavior and the risk he posed to their safety.
“In June 2024, he resurfaced, fraudulently claiming to be a senior officer and armed with a rifle. Upon being confronted, he resisted arrest aggressively, prompting the use of restraints as a precautionary measure. This action aligns with global best practices to ensure officer safety and prevent further escape attempts,” Adejobi stated.
The spokesperson added that Makinde’s past criminal activities had only intensified, and investigations into his latest offense are ongoing. He assured that the Nigeria Police remain committed to transparency, accountability, and the pursuit of justice.
“Makinde, a dismissed officer and serial criminal, is in custody awaiting further investigation and prosecution for his impersonation and other illicit activities,” Adejobi concluded.
