Shocking Revelation: Gen. Williams Questions IBB On Alleged Blood Oath With Abacha

A retired Chief of Defence Training and Planning, General Ishola Williams, has refuted claims made in former Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida’s newly released autobiography, asserting that Babangida had already positioned General Sani Abacha to take over before the controversial annulment of the June 12, 1993, election.

Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political program on Channels Television, Williams dismissed Babangida’s claim that Abacha’s takeover was unplanned. He disclosed that IBB frequently referred to Abacha as ‘Khalipha’, indicating he had groomed him as a successor.

The Question IBB Refused to Answer

Williams also shared details of a private midnight discussion with Babangida in Minna, where he directly confronted him about an alleged pact with Abacha.

“I asked him, ‘Did you have a blood oath with Abacha to ensure he succeeded you?’ But he refused to answer. This was a one-on-one conversation at the Presidential Guest House in Minna,” Williams revealed.

He further recalled a meeting where civilian governors urged Babangida to stay in power. Despite their plea, Williams advised IBB to transfer power to a civilian government.

“In August 1993, I wrote to IBB, telling him the best course for the military was to return power to civilians.

“When he stepped aside, I was Commander in Minna, and we had prepared to receive him with full military honors,” he added.

Abacha’s Unexpected Takeover

According to Williams, after Babangida’s departure, Abacha immediately flew into Minna, met with IBB, and proceeded to replace all the service chiefs, solidifying his control.
