Addressing a press conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday, former Akuku-Toru LGA Chairman, Rowland Sekibo, speaking on behalf of the group, accused Governor Fubara of deliberately delaying the enforcement of the court’s decision. He also criticized Fubara for rejecting the presidential intervention, which, according to him, would have secured his tenure and shielded him from impeachment.
“The presidential intervention was a major victory for Governor Fubara, ensuring that he could not be impeached while encouraging cooperation with the Assembly. However, he rejected it as unconstitutional, influenced by certain conflict entrepreneurs within and outside the state,” Sekibo stated.
Ex-LG Chairmen Condemn Oil Sabotage Threats
According to Naija News, Sekibo also expressed concern over the persistent political tension in Rivers State despite the Supreme Court verdict.
He alleged that certain individuals, particularly those aligned with the Ijaw ethnic community, were threatening to attack national oil facilities if Governor Fubara faced impeachment. He specifically named Prof. Benjamin Okaba, President of the Ijaw National Congress, and former militant leader Asari Dokubo, accusing them of making statements that could jeopardize Nigeria’s energy security.
Sekibo questioned why impeachment remained a point of contention despite the Supreme Court ruling and warned against using threats and intimidation to destabilize the state.
“We strongly condemn these baseless threats and urge the Federal Government and Nigerians to disregard such rhetoric, which paints the Ijaw people in a negative light. These threats also disregard the interests of other ethnic groups in Rivers State who equally contributed to Governor Fubara’s victory,” he said.
Fubara Accused of Escalating Political Tension
Sekibo further blamed Governor Fubara for inflaming tensions instead of fostering reconciliation after the Supreme Court ruling, alleging that some of his public statements could incite violence.
