The factional leadership of the Ijaw Youths Congress, IYC, Worldwide under the guidance of Dr. Theophilus Alaye, has issued a cautionary message to the six governors overseeing the South-South states, urging them to adopt a more proactive stance on matters pertaining to the Niger Delta region.
Expressing particular concern, the group emphasized the imperative for the governors to approach decisions regarding the protection of lives and properties within the region with heightened seriousness.
In an official statement penned by Mr. Bedford Berefa, the factional National Spokesperson of the organization, it was underscored that the governors must collectively confront the underlying causes of the crisis in Delta State. This entails conducting thorough investigations and facilitating dialogue to address grievances, thereby fostering sustained peace in the affected communities.
The statement articulated, “We perceive a sense of complacency among the South-South Governors within their respective states, lacking a clearly defined leadership structure and regional development agenda in comparison to other regions across the nation.”
“It is imperative to acknowledge that the current state of the Niger Delta region is, in part, attributed to the perceived inaction of both past and present leaders,” the statement continued.
Over the years, the IYC has consistently voiced apprehensions regarding the passive stance adopted by the governors of the Niger Delta region, particularly urging the leadership of the South-South Governors to take decisive action in addressing security and welfare concerns of the populace. This advocacy, the statement assures, will persist.
“The prevailing peace in the region risks being short-lived unless urgent measures are taken. The recent crisis in Delta State, which we believe warrants thorough investigation, along with various other unresolved issues, could potentially reignite hostilities, leading to a resurgence of illicit activities such as hostage-taking, kidnapping, and violence,” the statement warned.
