He warned that the current government’s focus on tribal narratives, combined with the country’s economic challenges, could spell disaster for Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Sowunmi stressed that leaders and elites across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones must engage with the government in a responsible, constructive manner that supports democratic principles.

He stated, “This nation has never faced a more fragile situation since 1914. The challenges under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership are putting the very concept of Nigeria at risk. The growing tribalization of government policies, regional politics, global economic challenges, and the complexities of governance are all making the situation more precarious.

“Any leader, whether at the national, state, or local level, inherits the administration as it is. Before taking office, they have no clear vision of the state of affairs. I believe all past leaders governed to the best of their abilities and within their capacities. Therefore, when engaging with the government, we must consider their position. Since Nigeria’s amalgamation, we’ve struggled to form a unified nation, and if we don’t manage tribal narratives carefully, we could severely damage the country.”

Sowunmi also urged President Tinubu to reconsider his economic team, which he described as “fourth-rate and South West dominated,” and to ensure more balanced appointments to reduce national tensions.

“It’s crucial for Nigerians to explore alternative approaches to governance, democracy, and engagement to preserve what we’ve built over the years,” he concluded.
