Abbas highlighted the significance of the event in showcasing the vibrancy and resilience of Nigeria’s evolving democracy, reaffirming the House’s dedication to upholding principles of transparency and accountability.
“Transparency and regular citizens’ engagement are more crucial than ever,” Abbas asserted. “We firmly believe that transparency ensures government actions are subject to public scrutiny, thereby promoting accountability.”
He underscored the importance of ongoing interactions with citizens, exemplified during the Open Week, as empowering individuals to voice concerns and participate in decision-making processes. This engagement, he emphasized, fosters a sense of ownership over governance, strengthens the social contract, rebuilds trust, and revitalizes democratic values.
Abbas reiterated that citizens’ engagement remains pivotal for an effective legislature, noting the 10th Assembly’s embrace of initiatives like the ‘OPEN NASS’ Project. This initiative, he explained, enhances oversight, legislative processes, and transparency within the National Assembly itself.
“As we hold other branches of government accountable, we equally welcome public scrutiny,” Abbas affirmed. “Through the House Open Week, we reclaim the legislature for its rightful owners—the citizens and our constituents.”
In response, Rep. Obi Aguocha, Chairman of the Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of Standing and Ad Hoc Committees, commended the collaborative spirit demonstrated during the event, emphasizing its alignment with the House’s commitment to serve Nigerians with integrity.
Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), acknowledged Speaker Abbas’s support for the industry, describing him as exceptional and instrumental in sustaining robust legislative oversight.
“The industry thrives through the support of the National Assembly,” Kyari acknowledged, highlighting Abbas’s distinct approach and dedication to legislative duties.
