In the statement, Abbas emphasized the need for clarification regarding the misconceptions about the bill he sponsored. He said, “The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., has noted media reports concerning the Counter Subversion Bill, which he introduced.”

Abbas acknowledged the public’s interest in the bill, which is related to national security. He clarified that the Counter Subversion Bill, 2024 (HB. 1652), introduced on July 23, 2024, is still in its preliminary stage. The bill aims to address subversive activities by various groups, including militias and cults, within Nigeria’s anti-terrorism framework.

He pointed out that similar legislation exists in countries like the UK, Spain, India, Turkey, Canada, and Australia. Abbas welcomed public engagement and discussion on the bill’s content and urged Nigerians to provide their feedback.

The bill will undergo a Second Reading in the House, where members will debate its merits. If approved, it will proceed to a relevant committee, which will hold public hearings to gather citizen input. This feedback will be used to refine the bill before it is reviewed in the Third Reading and sent to the Senate.
