The Counter Subversion Bill 2024, recently introduced in the lower chambers, seeks to impose severe penalties on Nigerians who do not recite the national anthem. The proposed legislation stipulates fines of up to N5 million or a 10-year prison sentence, or both, for those found guilty of refusing to recite the national anthem. Similar penalties would apply to individuals who destroy national symbols or places of worship.
Sahara Reporters reveals that the bill, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, is scheduled for its second reading, where its general principles will be debated. The bill also includes provisions for punishing individuals who destroy national symbols, deface places of worship with the intent to incite violence, or undermine the Federal Government, with fines and prison sentences similar to those for anthem non-compliance.
Additional clauses in the bill propose fines and imprisonment for setting up illegal roadblocks, unauthorized traffic duties, illegal curfews, unlawful processions, and forcibly taking over public or private places. It also penalizes loyalty to organizations that disregard Nigeria’s sovereignty.
In her reaction posted on X, Ezekwesili expressed her disdain for the bill, asserting that she will only recite the old Nigerian National Anthem and not the version recently adopted by President Tinubu. She criticized the bill as a frivolous distraction and a reflection of the lawmakers’ disregard for Nigeria’s real issues. Ezekwesili also accused the lawmakers of subverting Nigeria’s progress through poor governance and reiterated the public’s demand for an end to bad governance.
She concluded by urging the legislators to continue with their proposed legislation if it benefits them, while the nation faces significant challenges.
