Recent developments suggest that the much-discussed potential alliance among Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso may not come to fruition, signaling a divided opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the last election, has confidently declared his intention to win the 2027 presidential election. This bold statement was made during the inauguration of the NNPP’s secretariat in Katsina State. Kwankwaso also attended the state for a condolence visit to the Yar’Adua family following the death of Hajiya Dada, the mother of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
Once seen as a prime candidate for a united opposition, Kwankwaso made it clear that his party is prepared to take over leadership positions across Nigeria by 2027. He went further to dismiss the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating, “PDP is already dead, and we have moved on.”
His comments came shortly after the PDP revealed that discussions were ongoing among key opposition leaders, including Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso, regarding a potential merger to challenge the APC. According to PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, if Kwankwaso or Obi had remained within the party, the opposition could have closed the gap of over one million votes in the last election.
Abdullahi emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that “one of them will need to concede for the others,” to offer Nigerians hope amid rising poverty and insecurity. He noted that discussions among these opposition leaders are aimed at addressing the economic and political crises gripping the country.
Before the 2023 general election, there were also talks of an alliance between Peter Obi (Labour Party) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (NNPP), but those talks fell through. Recently, in an interview with News Central TV, Peter Obi reiterated his stance that his ambition is to see Nigeria work and that he would support others if they can deliver better results for the country.
