In a recent meeting held in Lokoja, Kogi State, stakeholders emphasized the necessity for the State House of Assembly to enhance citizen participation in the enactment of bills, aligning legislative decisions with the collective aspirations of the populace.
This call for greater involvement was echoed during a bi-monthly gathering organized by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation, in collaboration with the Initiative for Grassroots Advancement in Nigeria (INGRA), with support from the UK International Development arm of the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.
During the event, Hamza Aliyu, the Executive Director of INGRA, highlighted the forum’s achievements since its inauguration on November 2, 2024, noting that it has fulfilled over 80% of its objectives. One of these objectives is to raise awareness about constituency offices among citizens to enhance their effectiveness, a goal yet to be fully realized.
Aliyu revealed that the forum has conducted public hearings and organized constituency town hall meetings across the state’s three senatorial districts, along with a special retreat for state assembly legislators.
