State Government Acts Against Fraud, Suspends Payments To Political Appointees With Fake Employment LettersThe Niger State Government has revealed that suspected fraudsters have infiltrated its payroll by creating fake political appointees using forged appointment letters. This situation has led to delays in the disbursement of September salaries to legitimate political appointees in the state.

In response, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Binta Mamman, announced a mandatory screening exercise for all political appointees to identify and remove the impostors. She emphasized that only those who pass this screening will receive their salaries.

Mamman stated, “We have been alerted to the actions of some unscrupulous individuals who forged political appointment letters, causing the government to pay individuals who are not genuine appointees. We assure the public that the screening process is underway to accurately identify the true beneficiaries.”

She clarified that the government has issued letters to approximately 4,000 political appointees across various levels, including Commissioners, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, and Coordinators. This initiative aims to foster an inclusive government and reduce unemployment, providing citizens with a sense of belonging. However, Mamman lamented the disruption caused by the fraudulent activities.

Highlighting the financial burden, she noted that the state’s salary expenditure now exceeds ₦600 million. “The government is committed to identifying legitimate appointees as this is essential for reducing costs and reallocating funds to other critical areas,” she added.

Mamman reassured that Governor Bago’s intentions for inclusivity remain strong, but emphasized the necessity of rooting out those with fake appointments. “The screening is ongoing, and all genuine appointees must appear before the committee. Those with forged documents will be removed from the system.
