The Federal Government has opened applications for the 2027 Commonwealth Master’s and PhD Scholarships for qualified Nigerians seeking to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the scholarship programme is being administered by the Federal Scholarship Board under the Federal Ministry of Education, with prospective applicants required to satisfy specific academic and admission requirements.

For the Master’s programme, applicants are expected to possess a first degree with a minimum of Second Class Upper Division. Those applying for the PhD programme must have a relevant Master’s degree as well as at least a Second Class Lower Division in their first degree.

Applicants for both categories are required to have secured admission into at least two eligible universities in the United Kingdom. PhD candidates must also submit a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor at their preferred UK institution.

The ministry further listed evidence of participation in the National Youth Service Corps programme among the eligibility requirements for applicants.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, applications will be evaluated based on academic merit, the potential development impact of the proposed study after completion and the quality of the applicant’s study plan.

Interested candidates are required to submit their applications electronically by registering on the Electronic Application System and completing the online application form.

Applicants must upload scanned copies of their passport photographs, university academic transcripts, birth certificates and admission letters from eligible UK institutions listed on the application form.

The deadline for submission of completed applications is October 20, 2026. After submitting their applications online, candidates are expected to generate a PDF copy of the completed form, download and print one hard copy for submission at the designated interview venue.

The ministry also stated that applicants presenting foreign academic certificates must provide official translation and evaluation documents where applicable.

Prospective scholars have been advised to ensure that their proposed areas of study reflect Nigeria’s development priorities. These areas include education, healthcare, economic growth and the private sector, governance and conflict management, climate and environmental issues, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, as well as humanitarian disasters and emergencies.

The Federal Government urged eligible Nigerians to carefully prepare their study proposals and demonstrate how their proposed programmes could contribute to national development upon completion.

The scholarship opportunity is aimed at supporting qualified Nigerian students pursuing advanced academic training in the UK while developing expertise that can contribute to the country’s long-term development needs.
