In a statement on Friday, NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed that the passenger carrying the undeclared funds had arrived in Nigeria aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight No. 951 from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Maiwada explained that failing to declare such funds is a violation of both the Anti-Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

These regulations require travelers to declare any amounts exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent in negotiable instruments upon arrival or departure.

The statement noted, “Acting on intelligence, customs officers carried out a thorough inspection, which led to the discovery of the concealed funds.”

The seized money has now been transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and potential prosecution.

Maiwada reiterated the NCS’s commitment to enforcing financial regulations and combating illicit financial activities at Nigeria’s borders. He urged travelers to comply with the law and declare any amounts over the set threshold when entering or leaving the country.
