Subsidy Removal: Obaseki Extends Free Bus Service In Edo By Three Months

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has granted an extension to the state’s free bus initiative, responding to the removal of fuel subsidies by the federal government. Initially launched in September 2023 for a two-month period, the scheme aimed to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal and has now been prolonged until July 2024.

The first phase of the program benefited over 1.5 million residents, prompting subsequent extensions until February and later April 2024. Covering both intra and intercity routes operated by the Edo City Transport Services (ECTS), the initiative includes routes such as Auchi – Igarra – Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo; and Abudu-Ubiaja, among others.

Managing Director of the Edo State Transport Authority (ESTA), Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, emphasized the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens, announcing the extension until July 10, 2024. She highlighted the positive impact of the program, which has benefited over 4,799,960 residents, demonstrating the government’s dedication to supporting the populace amidst economic challenges stemming from the fuel subsidy removal.
