Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, Offers Insights on Electricity Tariff Situation
In recent developments regarding electricity tariffs, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has shed light on potential reductions for Band A consumers, contingent upon the exchange rate dropping below N1,000 to a dollar. This announcement follows significant shifts in the electricity subsidy policy.
On April 3, the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), ceased subsidies for Band A electricity consumers, resulting in tariff increases from N68 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to N255/kWh. While tariffs for other consumer bands remain unaffected, Band A customers, known for their consistent power supply, now face the highest tariffs. This adjustment has ignited discussions on electricity affordability and its ramifications for residential and commercial users.
During an appearance on Channels TV, Minister Adelabu addressed concerns regarding these tariff adjustments. He highlighted that despite the increase, electricity costs for Band A consumers remain lower compared to expenses incurred from running generators, which many Nigerians rely on due to erratic power supply.
Moreover, the minister underscored the impact of fluctuating exchange rates on tariff adjustments, as a substantial portion of the power sector’s costs are denominated in dollars, including equipment and machinery imports necessary for power generation and distribution.
Minister Adelabu expressed optimism that should the Naira strengthen against the dollar, falling below the N1,000 threshold, there could be a corresponding reduction in electricity tariffs, easing financial burdens, especially for Band A consumers.
He stated, “The tariff is flexible. I can tell you if the naira gains more and the exchange rate comes down below N1,000 to a dollar, it must positively affect the tariff; and the tariff, even for Band A, will come down below the N225/KWh that we are currently charging.”
Furthermore, the minister highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade customers on other bands to Band A as power generation improves over the next six months.
While the recent electricity hike under the President Bola Tinubu administration has faced criticism, various groups and individuals have called for a reversal of the decision.
