Supreme Court Overturns Tinubu’s Pardon, Upholds Maryam Sanda’s Death Sentence
The Supreme Court on Friday delivered a landmark ruling, overturning the pardon granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Maryam Sanda and affirming her death sentence by hanging for the 2017 murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
President Tinubu had earlier reduced Sanda’s death sentence to 12 years’ imprisonment on “compassionate grounds” in October 2025.
In a 4-1 split decision, the Apex Court dismissed Sanda’s appeal, ruling that the prosecution had proven culpable homicide beyond a reasonable doubt.
Justice Moore Adumein, who delivered the lead judgment, held that the Court of Appeal, Abuja, was correct in upholding the original death sentence handed down by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in 2020.
Addressing the legal issues surrounding the Presidential pardon, Justice Adumein stated:
“It was wrong for the Executive to seek to exercise its power of pardon over a case of culpable homicide while an appeal was pending.”
The Supreme Court declared all grounds of Sanda’s appeal to be without merit, effectively nullifying the compassionate reduction granted by the Federal Government and reinstating her original conviction for the brutal killing of Bilyaminu Bello during a domestic dispute.
