The 2023-24 Nigeria Premier Football League season concluded on Sunday with Enugu Rangers clinching their eighth league title after a resounding 2-1 victory over Gombe United at New Jos Stadium. The Flying Antelopes, led by manager Fidelis Ilechukwu, secured the championship with an early blitz, courtesy of goals from Kazeem Ogunleye and Godwin Obaje, despite Anas Hassan’s reply for the hosts. The victory capped a stellar season where Rangers finished five points clear at the top, amassing 70 points in total.
Remo Stars and Enyimba also celebrated success, securing continental tickets. Remo Stars secured second place with a 2-1 win over Katsina United, thanks to goals from Sodiq Ismail and Dayo Ojo. Meanwhile, Enyimba clinched third place and a CAF Confederation Cup spot with late strikes from Chijioke Mbaoma and Alade Balogun, edging Plateau United 2-0.
Chijioke Mbaoma of Enyimba claimed the season’s top scorer accolade, winning the Eunisell Golden Boot with 17 goals, surpassing his closest rival Sikiru Alimi of Remo Stars by a solitary goal.
In the goalkeeping department, Amas Obasogie of Bendel Insurance stood out with 18 clean sheets, leading the league ahead of Kayode Bankole (Remo Stars) and Kingdom Osayi (Doma United).
On the flip side, Sporting Lagos suffered relegation back to the Nigeria National League following a defeat to 3SC, despite efforts under manager Abdullahi Biffo to avoid the drop. Similarly, Doma United’s promising start dwindled into relegation, despite their initial strong defensive record.
Bayelsa United and Akwa United managed to retain their NPFL status with crucial wins on the final day, avoiding the fate of relegated teams Heartland and Gombe United.
Overall, the 2023-24 NPFL season concluded with Enugu Rangers celebrating another league triumph, while Remo Stars, Enyimba, and others secured their places in continental competitions for the upcoming season.
