About 50 members of the House of Representatives, representing various constituencies across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones under the Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South-East, have jointly petitioned President Bola Tinubu. They implore him to utilize constitutional provisions to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a letter dated June 19, 2024, addressed to President Tinubu, the lawmakers emphasized the importance of invoking Section 174 of the Constitution of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. They argue that such actions are crucial for fostering peace and addressing security challenges in the South-East region.

Signatories to the three-page letter include Obi Aguocha (Abia), Ikenga Ugochinyere (Imo), Afam Ogene (Anambra), Muhammed Jajere (Yobe), Aliyu Mustapha (Kaduna), Midala Balami (Borno), and Abiante Awaji-Inombek (Rivers), among others from diverse political affiliations.

Nnamdi Kanu recently expressed a willingness to settle treason charges against him out of court and condemned the violence in the South-East linked to IPOB’s agitation for secession.

The lawmakers urged President Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, to use his powers under Section 174(1) of the Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to secure Kanu’s release and discontinue his trial. They cited previous instances where similar measures were extended to activists like Omoyele Sowore, charged with treasonable felony.

The letter underscores the lawmakers’ belief that Kanu’s release would facilitate constructive dialogue, promote national unity, and address longstanding grievances in the South-East. They argue that such actions are pivotal amid ongoing constitutional reforms and national challenges, including unemployment, insecurity, and economic hardship.

The lawmakers expressed confidence that securing Kanu’s release would contribute to reducing regional tensions and redirect focus towards economic growth and development in the affected areas.
