Consequently, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising SSANU and NASU has instructed their members to stage protests across various branches starting tomorrow.

Earlier, JAC had issued a two-week ultimatum demanding payment of four months’ salaries withheld by the government, which had been approved by President Bola Tinubu for four university-based unions.

While the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) received their payments last October, SSANU and NASU remained unpaid, causing significant tension within the university system.

Despite the ultimatum expiring on July 4, a meeting summoned by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, failed to resolve the issue as assurances were given without concrete commitments.

In response, JAC has scheduled branch protests for tomorrow, a national protest in Abuja on July 18, and is preparing for a potential full-scale strike thereafter, citing the government’s perceived lack of commitment.

The circular sent to branch chairmen emphasized the discontent over government inaction, urging full participation in the planned protests and readiness for further industrial actions if grievances remain unaddressed.
