Tanko Quits As Obidient Movement Coordinator, Reveals New Career Move
Yunusa Tanko, an ally of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has stepped down as the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement following his appointment to a new advisory position.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Tanko announced the development on Wednesday, confirming that he had accepted an appointment as Special Adviser on Northern Nigeria to Peter Obi.
Tanko said the new assignment would see him contribute to political engagement, mobilisation and coordination across the northern region as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
He stated that he would continue working with the movement’s structures, stakeholders, communities and supporters to strengthen engagement and broaden its political base in support of Obi’s political project.
Tanko expressed appreciation to Obi for the confidence placed in him and thanked leaders, volunteers, coordinators, supporters and other Nigerians who had worked with him during his two years as National Coordinator.
He also said the North remained important to the broader political objectives surrounding the 2027 elections and pledged to contribute to efforts aimed at deepening the movement’s presence in the region.
“I am honoured by the confidence placed in me,” Tanko said, adding that he would work alongside existing structures and stakeholders in his new capacity.
The development marks a change in Tanko’s role within the political movement, as he moves from coordinating the Obidient Movement nationally to focusing on political engagement in Northern Nigeria.
Reports emerging on Wednesday also indicated that Dr Moses Paul had assumed the position of National Coordinator following Tanko’s departure.
Tanko’s new assignment comes as Peter Obi and his supporters continue preparations and political engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
